Stepping up and Reaching Out!
Saturday 8th May saw the very first Toybox conference take place, with hosts Adrian and Bridget Plass and special guest Joel Edwards of Micah Challenge. 140 people attended the conference, the theme of which was ‘Stepping Up and Reaching Out’.
The day was full of laughter and hope, but there were sad moments as well. Conference attendees were reminded of the individual stories of children living and working on the street of Latin America. In their main speech, the Plasses told the stories of some of the children that they met on a recent trip to El Salvador with Toybox. Many in the audience were moved to tears by the story of Tatiana who was abused by her step father and had a daughter when she was just 14 years old. Toybox is supporting abused children like this, and others who are on the streets or vulnerable.
There is also a need to work on the root causes of why children live on the streets. In this vein, Joel Edwards set a challenge for everyone to think big about the way that street, working and vulnerable children in Latin America can be helped. The most crucial way, he suggested, is to reduce poverty in general, and also to put laws and policies in place to protect children so that they don’t get pulled into street life. Joel also spoke about the Biblical foundation for campaigning against world poverty and injustice.
In a question and answer session, Joel said “The thing that keeps me going when the dream of the end of poverty seems a long way off is the rightness of the call – the fact that it is God’s heart for the poor that we should be following.”
Toybox itself is seeking to step up and reach out – aiming to provide more support in more countries and placing more emphasis on tackling root causes. The charity is speaking out on the issue of tackling global poverty, through a campaign called The Big Dream which is calling for the Millennium Development Goals to be fulfilled. The Goals are a series of promises around poverty, education, health and empowerment that should be fulfilled by 2015.
As the new government takes its final form it will be increasingly important to keep the pressure on to make these goals a reality and change the lives of millions of people around the world including street children.
Transcripts of the keynote speeches from the conference will be available soon.
