Many of the projects and teams on the ground in Latin America come across children whose families are in great need of support. Alongside local churches, the teams run workshops for the local communities about family, and the importance of relationships and good parenting.
The workshops and the time that the teams spend with the parents is vital to ensure that not only are the parents relating to their children in the best way, but that the children also learn how to behave towards others following the example of good role models. This will in time mean that younger generations grow up with the knowledge of what makes a good relationship, reducing some of the factors that push children out onto the streets.
When children are exposed to maltreatment, it not only affects them physically, but mentally as well. When a child only sees one way of relating to others, they will inevitably mirror those mannerisms in their own behaviour. By ensuring parents are treating their children with love and respect, the children will reflect that behaviour when they become parents themselves. Future generations will benefit from the passing on of these parenting skills, and we can have faith that fewer children should end up on the streets as a result.
