Esteban's Story
“When I was six, my grandma sent me to school. But instead I decided I wanted to hang out with the gangs on the streets. They taught me lots of bad things. They told me that they were my friends and I believed them.”
Always on the look-out for new recruits, Esteban was another child scooped up from the streets by gangs.
“When I was 12, I did something really bad and all my so-called friends in the gang wanted to kill me. When they couldn’t find me, they attacked my family. I walked in the door after being away from my family for two months, my grandma was in tears, she was crying so much. I asked her to forgive me.”
Esteban’s grandmother took him to Help Home, a project supported by Toybox, so that he could be safe. There, surrounded by love and protection, his life changed. He was elected a Child Ambassador on behalf of his project.
“My project leader asked me if I wanted to be an Ambassador and I said ‘YES!’ very quickly! Sharing with the other Ambassadors has changed my life and has made me really happy. I can help the other boys in my project and teach them about things. We are doing a campaign to stop cruelty to children.
“Before, I was a really angry person. Children asked me if I wanted to play with them and I just thumped them, I was so angry. But I prayed to God not to be an angry person anymore. And I know I will overcome.
“I just want to thank you for everything, especially for praying for us.”
