Fernando's story
Lima, Peru

12 year-old Fernando is the youngest of six brothers. Fernando's dad sadly died when he was very young and so his mother has to work long hours to provide for her family, selling sweets on the streets. This meant Fernando was often left on his own, resulting in him spending a lot of time on the streets of Lima. He stopped going to school and got drawn into some bad habits.
Fernando's mother noticed he was getting behind in his

education and was at great risk on the streets and so took him to a Toybox home. With Fernando in this loving, family environment, his mother could be assured her son was away from the danger of the streets. He also receives help with his education and all the food and clothing he needs.
With the support of the home, Fernando is now beginning to tackle his bad habbits and catching up with his school work. His self-esteem has improved and he is a much more confident young man. He has also discovered a talent for sport.
Fernando is now feeling positive about his future, he says
“I feel really happy in the home. I am listened to and supported; everyone is very nice. My mother visits me often and I look forward to being able to live with her again in the future. But for now I really appreciate all the support I am receiving in the home to help me improve my life."
