Alejandro's story
Guatemala City, Guatemala

15-year-old Alejandro lives in Guatemala City with his mother and sisters. Physically and emotionally abused by his stepfather throughout his childhood, Alejandro grew up believing that his family did not love him. His mother did not stop this mistreatment and Alejandro’s behaviour deteriorated to truancy, stealing, and drugs.
Alejandro’s stepfather hit him in the leg with a shovel during a construction project, causing a serious injury. In hospital, Alejandro reported his stepfather’s mistreatment, and the legal authorities acted immediately, putting his stepfather in prison.
Alejandro’s life has improved since. He is now in contact with his biological father and has joined a Toybox-supported project in Guatemala called ‘Children with a Future’. Here he studies diligently, learns about music and pastry-making, and enjoys being on the football team.
Alejandro has found a fami

ly at ‘Children with a Future.’ He comments:
“Teacher Hugo, the director of the organisation, is like my uncle. He always advises me and cares about me… my classmates are like my cousins.”
Alejandro feels loved and his confidence in God has grown. He is well on his way to making his dream of becoming a business manager come true. He says:
“I say to all the children: Keep going, never give up in your studies because they are very important to have a good future.”
